ForensicWe used to think that mental illness was rare, but now know that it is common, and often untreated. As our culture becomes more anxiety-prone, those individuals with mental illness may more easily escalate. This puts increased pressures on law enforcement to respond quickly, effectively, and appropriately. This presentation provides information about the nature of mental illness/mental health crises, characteristics to help identify someone with MH issues, and some basic ways to respond in ways that are safe, compassionate, and effective. We will address aspects of various mental illnesses, ways to identify impending crises, and strategies for responding to and managing situations while keeping the safety of the individual, community and the law enforcement officer in mind.
Learning Objectives
Law Enforcement Objectives:
Objective #1: Participants will be able to describe characteristics of mental illness and how they may be presented
Objective #2: Participants will learn steps to assess the situation as well as their own status and the person’s status
Objective #3: Participants will be able to describe strategies and steps to employ when responding to persons with possible mental illness so that the likelihood of escalation is decreased.
Nursing outcome:
Attendees will have improved knowledge of strategies to employ when responding to persons with possible mental illness.
Speakers
Director of Psychology
Marjorie Kukor, Ph.D., is Director of Psychology at Ohio MHAS’s Central Ohio Behavioral Healthcare (COBH), formerly Twin Valley Behavioral Healthcare in Columbus, OH. She has also worked in Ohio’s Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections and has developed a wealth of clinical and forensic experience from these and additional settings (American Red Cross Services to the Armed Forces, teaching at colleges/universities, Netcare Crisis Responder, women’s healthcare and other non-profit agencies). In addition, Dr. Kukor provides training to other professionals on military issues, mental illness and capacity, de-escalation strategies, suicide risk assessment and management (she is a certified AMSR trainer), Trauma Informed Care training, as well as offering a variety of clinical workshops to other non-profit agencies and law enforcement groups in the region. She earned her bachelor’s degree from University of Cincinnati and her master’s and Ph.D. from Miami (Ohio) University. She continues to volunteer for the American Red Cross.
